Data brokers who do reverse cell phone lookup searches took a hit this week as Senate hearings concerning the sale of name and address info from cell phone numbers were held. Senators expressed their concern over the ease with which security for phone numbers and other telephone accounts were bypassed to “reverse” or reveal private information regarding the cell phone owner.

Mobile phone carrier giants like Verizon Wireless and privacy groups like epic.org have filed suit to stop the flow of private cell phone data from third-parties like online data brokers.

Even more alarming, it was revealed that some of the largest clients for cell phone lookup searches are banks, law enforcement agencies, and attorneys to learn about other’s current location and conversations! This development has huge liability implications for both purchasers of this info, the procurers (data brokers) of the info, and the custodians (Cell carriers, telephone companies, etc) of this customer information. It’s been widely believed that this type of “grey-area” data was often used (abused) by jealous or suspicious spouses, business spies, political foes and stalkers, but law enforcement agencies like the Department of Homeland Security??!
